Biography

Jane E. Joseph, PhD, is a Full Professor and Director of the Neuroimaging Division in the Department of Neuroscience at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She received a B.S. in Computer Science and M.S. in Applied Psychology from Clemson University, and her PhD in cognitive psychology from the University of Virginia. After completing her postdoctoral work at Georgetown University in cognitive neuroscience, she served as a faculty member in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at the University of Kentucky for 10 years prior to moving to MUSC.

Dr. Joseph’s research has focused on understanding the neural basis of cognition and affective behavior in neurological, psychiatric and developmental disorders. As Principal Investigator, she has received federal and foundation funding from numerous sources including the National Institutes of Health (NIMH, NICHD, NIA, NIDA), National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense and Autism Speaks. She has also served as a co-Investigator on numerous federally funded projects. Her current research interests in Alzheimer’ Disease (AD) are focused on identifying neural and connectome markers of vulnerability and risk for AD. Specifically, recent projects build connectome models of AD and apply those models to conditions that present risk for AD such as mild cognitive impairment, traumatic brain injury, and alcohol use disorder. The goal is to determine if functional brain networks show alterations that are similar to AD, but years or decades before AD can be detected with current clinical assessments.
